Lullabies can help preemies recover sooner Soft music in incubators results in shorter hospital stays, studies suggest

Doctors in northeastern Ohio say a soft lullaby can do more than soothe a premature infant.

Preliminary results from studies done at Akron Children's Hospital show lullaby music piped into preemies' incubators can help them leave the hospital two weeks earlier, on average.

The research was paid for by the Kulas Foundation of Cleveland . It involved babies in hospitals around the region that weighed less than three pounds and were born up to 20 weeks before they were due.

The doctors say the infants who were serenaded had better sleep and breathing patterns and heart rates, allowing them to recover sooner than babies not treated to music.
