Can you afford to live to 100?
Can you afford to grow old? In this age of rising medical costs, longer life expectancy and uncertainly in the economy, this is a question every baby boomer should be asking himself. People over the age of 60 account for the largest portion of health care spending in the country. Are you prepared to shoulder these additional expenses, to pay for the care you will need to live a long life? With some planning and lifestyle changes it is possible. Lets look at some things you can do right now to help ensure you can afford old age.

  • Long Term Care Insurance
The longer you live the more likely the chance that you will need some help in performing the activities of daily living such as bathing, dressing or preparing meals. These activities, while necessary are not considered medical in nature and any help needed to perform them is not covered by Medicare.
  • Medicare also does not pay for nursing home care that is considered custodial in nature. Long Term care insurance will however help to pay for this type of care. Many insurance companies are now selling this type of coverage and many employers has started offering this to their employees at a less expensive group rate. Rates will vary depending on the age you are when you first take out the policy.
  • Secondary Health Insurance
If you are still working check on your retirement benefits. If you are eligible for health care benefits they will act as a secondary or supplement to Medicare. This will help with the large yearly Medicare deductible and 20% co-payment. If you are retired from the military and Medicare eligible you may be eligible for Tricare For Life which will supplement your Medicare benefits. Tricare for Life (and most other secondary health insurance) includes a benefit for medications.
  • Medicare Supplements
Also known as , these policies are available with varying benefit levels (and prices) to help supplement Medicare coverage. Not all cover medications.
  • Saving On Medications
Stretch your retirement dollars by saving money on your medications. Shop around for the best prices. Ask your doctor to order a generic drug if possible. Some programs such as the AARP mail order drug program can save on regularly taken drugs. Investigate ordering your drugs from a Canadian pharmacy. Some seniors report savings of up to 50% on prescriptions.
  • Prevent Chronic Illness
Chronic illnesses such as diabetes and heart disease may not kill you at a young age but will certainly use more healthcare dollars over your lifetime. Exercise, a healthy diet, smoking cessation and moderating alcohol intake and all help to maintain robust good health for more years.
